What to do when approaching your auto insurance policy's expiration.
Your auto insurance policy's expiration date is the date when auto insurance coverage ends if your auto insurance policy isn't renewed. The expiration date can be found on the declarations page of your auto insurance policy, on a proof of insurance card, or on a recent auto insurance renewal notice.
Assuming you are dissatisfied with your company, start shopping for a new policy at least 45 days prior to your current policy’s expiration. This will allow you to end your current policy without the $50 cancellation fee common to most insurance carriers.
If your insurance policy expires and/ or in non renewed after you register a vehicle, the DMV will find out about it and you could face a fine. The DMV will be notified by your insurance company that your insurance has expired and they will then notify the registered owner of the vehicle that he or she needs to provide proof of insurance or face a fine.
If you failure to respond to the DMV's request for proof of auto insurance, the DMV may suspend the registration of your vehicle and refuse to renew or reactivate it. If you still don't pay, you may lose your ability to register any other vehicles.
