Rhode Island minimum liability limits; $25,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other parties, $50,000 total per accident, and $25,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property. Other mandatory coverages include $25,000 (per person) and $50,000 (total per accident) in uninsured (UI) and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage.

Optional plans include blanket umbrella, medical coverage (PIP), collision, and comprehensive coverage.

If you are convicted of DUI in Rhode Island (Assuming your insurance company doesn't drop you immediately), your insurance costs will increase at least 30%. Buying insurance through a "high-risk" agency will cost substantially more.

If you are high risk (multiple tickets and/or accidents), you may have to use the Rhode Island Automobile Insurance Plan (RIAIP). The Rhode Island Automobile Insurance Plan was created to provide automobile insurance coverage to eligible risks who seek coverage and are unable to obtain such coverage through the voluntary market. If you are new to Rhode Island, you must register your vehicle within 30 days of becoming a resident. Your insurance company must be licensed to do business in Rhode Island and you must bring proof of insurance (your insurance card or policy) to the DMV to register your vehicle. Penalties for driving without insurance in Rhode Island are a $100-$500 fine and up to 3 months license/registration suspension.
