Illinois Auto Insurance

As an Illinois resident, you're financially responsible for the damage and injury you cause in an auto accident. Liability protection insures you for these potential expenses, and is compulsory in Illinois.

Illinois has low minimum liability limits, $20,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other parties, $40,000 total per accident, and $15,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property. Illinois State law requires a minimum of $15,000 in uninsured (UI)/ underinsured motorist coverage (UIM). Other options include blanket umbrella, collision, medical coverage (PIP), comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists bodily injury coverage.

If you are convicted of DUI in Illinois (Assuming your insurance company doesn't drop you immediately), your insurance costs will increase at least 30%. Buying insurance through a "high-risk" agency will cost substantially more.

If you are high risk (multiple tickets and/or accidents), you may have to use the Illinois Automobile Insurance Plan (ILAIP). The Illinois Automobile Insurance Plan was created to provide automobile insurance coverage to eligible risks who seek coverage and are unable to obtain such coverage through the voluntary market. Eligible Illinois Automobile Insurance Plan risks are shared among companies writing automobile insurance in the state of Illinois.

Below (again) are the minimal limits.

Proof of insurance is required when you register the vehicle, to be kept at all times in vehicle, and especially at the time of an accident. Your insurer must notify Department of Motor Vehicles or other state agency of cancellation or nonrenewal. Your insurer must also verify randomly selected insurance policies upon request. Penalties for driving without insurance in Illinois are a $500 fine, 60-day registration suspension, and/or $100 reinstatement fee.
