Florida Auto Insurance

As a Florida resident you're financially responsible for the damage and injury you cause in an auto accident. Automobile liability insurance protects you from these potential expenses. Property damage liability insurance is compulsory in Florida.

Florida has low minimum liability limits, $10,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other parties, $20,000 total per accident, and $10,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property. You are also required to purchase $10,000 worth of medical coverage (PIP). Other options include blanket umbrella, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists bodily injury coverage.

If you are convicted of DUI in Florida (Assuming your insurance company doesn't drop you immediately), your insurance costs will increase at least 30%. Buying insurance through a "high-risk" agency will cost substantially more.

If you are high risk (multiple tickets and/or accidents), you may have to use the Florida Automobile Joint Underwriting Association (FAJUA).

Below (again) are the minimal limits.

Proof of insurance is required when you register the vehicle, to be kept at all times in vehicle, and especially at the time of an accident. Your insurer must notify Department of Motor Vehicles or other state agency of cancellation or nonrenewal. Your insurer must also submit entire lists of insureds in effect, which may be compared with registrations at a state agency. Penalties for driving without insurance in Florida are a 60-day license revocation, vehicle impoundment for subsequent offense and confiscation of plates in Dade, Broward and Hillsborough counties.
