Delaware Auto Insurance

As a Delaware resident you're financially responsible for the damage and injury you cause in an auto accident. Liability protection insures you for these potential expenses, and is compulsory in Delaware.

Delaware has low minimum liability limits, $15,000 per person for injuries you cause to the other parties, $30,000 total per accident, and $10,000 for damage you cause to the other party's property. Other options include medical payments, blanket umbrella, collision, comprehensive, and uninsured and underinsured motorists bodily injury coverage.

If you are convicted of DUI in Delaware (Assuming your insurance company doesn't drop you immediately), your insurance costs will increase at least 30%. Buying insurance through a "high-risk" agency will cost substantially more.

If you are high risk (multiple tickets and/or accidents), you may have to go the Delaware Automobile Insurance Plan (DAIP). It was created to provide automobile insurance coverage to eligible risks who seek coverage and are unable to obtain such coverage through the voluntary market. Any insurance agent holding a valid Property & Casualty license for the state of Delaware is eligible to write business through the Plan and consumers possessing a valid Delaware driver's license and a vehicle registered in Delaware are eligible to be assigned through the DAIP.

Below (again) are the minimal limits.

State minimums Bodily injury liability / person Bodily injury liability / accident Property damage / accident Medical coverage (PIP) Uninsured motorist
Delaware $15,000 $30,000 $10,000 $0 $0

Proof of insurance is required to be kept at all times in vehicle, especially at the time of an accident. Your insurer must notify Department of Motor Vehicles or other state agency of cancellation or nonrenewal. Your insurer must also verify randomly selected insurance policies upon request. Penalties for driving without insurance in Delaware are from a $1,500-$2,000 fine and/or a six-month license suspension.
