Alabama Auto Insurance 
Auto liability insurance is compulsory in Alabama (Section 32-7-6(c). Or you can post a motor vehicle liability bond shall be in the amount of not less than fifty thousand dollars ($50,000). Or deposit with the State Treasurer not less than fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) in cash (AL Code 32-7A-4).
Alabama's minimum liability limits are below. If you have income and/or assets to protect, also consider optional coverages such as medical payments, collision, and comprehensive coverage. In Alabama, 25 percent of all drivers are uninsured, so also consider uninsured (UI) and underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage.
If you are convicted of DUI in Alabama (Assuming your insurance company doesn't drop you immediately), your insurance costs will increase at least 30%. Buying insurance through a "high-risk" agency will cost substantially more.
If you are high risk (multiple tickets and/or accidents), you may have to go the Alabama Automobile Insurance Plan route. It was created to provide automobile insurance coverage to eligible risks who seek coverage and are unable to obtain such coverage through the voluntary market.
Eligible Alabama Automobile Insurance Plan risks are shared among companies writing automobile insurance in the state of Alabama. This Plan became effective May 17, 1948.
Any insurance agent holding a valid Property & Casualty license for the state of Alabama can write business through the ALAIP.
Consumers possessing a valid Alabama driver's license and a vehicle registered in Alabama are eligible to be assigned through ALAIP. For further information, ask your current agent or broker, and if they are unresponsive, ask us.

Proof of insurance is required when you register the vehicle, to be kept at all times in vehicle, and especially at the time of an accident. Penalties for driving without insurance in Alabama are a $500 fine and license suspension.
