DUIs; How to minimize the insurance pain

If you have been arrested for suspected DUI, Attorneys and Judges both agree it is foolhardy for someone to defend himself against such an expensive charge. Another problem is people taking field sobriety tests and telling the police how many drinks you have had, etc. If you are drunk, such statements will not help you (Hint: don't drive drunk). Examples of some fees you may have to pay, if convicted:
  • $1,500 to $10,000 legal fees (depending on number of previous offences
  • $100 - The police agency that arrested you may assess you a fee
  • $25 monthly probation service fee
  • $25 Court administration fees
  • $5 Court document storage
  • $15 court security fees
  • $50 Circuit clerk's office
  • $30 County fees
  • $1,500 to $20,000 in Court fines
A first offense could be as little as $3000, while the high end for a second or third offense (excluding any property or punitive damages if there are injured victims) can be as high as $30,000.

The best way to minimize any auto insurance pain from a DUI is not to get one in the first place. Drink over a neighbors house, or in your own home. Or if need be, drink at a local restaurant or bar within walking distance to your house.

If you feel you must drink, well, you need a 12 step meeting then! Other options once you are busted:
  • Get an experienced DUI / DWI drunk driving defense attorney to represent you.
  • Talk politley to the cops.
  • Politely refuse field sobriety exercises.
  • Refuse to take an on scene breath test.
  • Contact a friend or relative from jail as soon as possible so they can hear you speak and note your state of sobriety.
  • Always be polite and respectful to the police officers. How you are perceived by a jury is extremely critical.
  • Make a detailed list of all the events before being stopped up to and including being released from custody.

"I found out our car insurance carrier charged us an annual *membership* fee and used the funds for political purposes we didn't agree with. None of your carriers charged any "fee" and we got a better deal!"
- Tom M., Northern VA

"We used your site to get several rates from competing companies. We saved money and already used the road support coverage. Very efficient, thanks."
- Mickey Rosenstein, Washington State
